In a bombshell legal brief, Flaum Appetizing's attorney, Jeffery Meyer of the firm Kaufman Dolowich Voluck & Gonzo LLP, is accused of extremely serious ethical violations in connection with an attempt to trick immigrant workers at Flaum into signing away their right to the wages they worked for.

Workers and kosher consumers around the world participated in actions today to call on Tnuva, the world's largest kosher cheese company, to honor the human rights of its distribution workers.  The multinational kosher cheese giant distributes its cheese in New York City though the Flaum Appetizing Corp., a business widely shunned for unlawful labor practices and abuse of immigrant workers from Latin America. While a consensus has largely emerged against Flaum's labor practices, Tnuva continues to do business with Flaum.

Queens, NY – Immigrant workers at Pur Pac, a food distribution warehouse supplying many landmark Chinese restaurants, bakeries, and cafes in Chinatown and around the City, have won a major settlement with the company after prevailing in a bitterly contested workplace justice campaign. The comprehensive settlement will return $470,000 in illegally withheld minimum wage and overtime pay and subjects Pur Pac to a binding code of conduct which includes protection for collective activity and compels compliance with all workplace laws including anti-discrimination and health & safety protections. The workers organized with Focus on the Food Chain, a joint campaign from Brandworkers and the IWW which is challenging sweatshop conditions in a sprawling industrial corridor of food processing and distribution warehouses that service New York City markets and restaurants.

State Supreme Court Justice Wayne P. Saitta has dismissed a defamation lawsuit filed by Gorilla Coffee against a group of its former employees who spoke out regarding management's behavior at the company.  After sustained attempts to improve what they viewed as a hostile work environment at the prominent Brooklyn-based cafe and coffee roaster, the workers caused a stir in the gourmet coffee community and in the news media by resigning their employment as a group and discussing their decision in a letter to the New York Times.

"Today is a sad day for the principle of equal rights under the law and for the economic security of every working family.  The National Labor Relations Board's decision in Mezonos Maven Bakery allows unscrupulous employers to retaliate against undocumented workers and violate federal labor law without any meaningful sanction whatsoever.  Under the NLRB's interpretation, an employer does not have to pay a single cent of backpay for illegally firing an undocumented worker regardless of whether the employer bothered to verify a worker's immigration status during years or even decades of hard work undertaken by that employee.

Rabbis are joining forces to pressure a Brooklyn distributor of kosher products to pay back hundreds of thousands of dollars they say is owed to former workers.

Religious leaders will form a delegation with Brandworkers, a Queens nonprofit labor group, to rally Tuesday against Flaum Appetizing Corp., a hummus producer that also distributes the kosher cheese of Tnuva, an international company.

Popular NYC Chinese Restaurant Chain Drops Supplier over Massive Wage Theft

The Cottage chain of Chinese restaurants has discontinued all restaurant supply purchases from Pur Pac, a Queens-based distribution warehouse that, through predecessor companies, engaged in massive wage theft and illegal retaliation against workers who stood up for their rights. Though Pur Pac, through its previous incarnations as E-Z Supply and Sunrise Plus, was found liable in both federal court and the National Labor Relations Board for pervasive workers' rights violations, the workers have yet to see any of the compensation they are owed. Cottage restaurants, by far one of Pur Pac's most significant customers, dropped the distribution company after a spirited worker-led advocacy effort calling on Cottage to avoid using suppliers that violate workers' human rights.

"Brandworkers applauds the Target workers and UFCW Local 1500 for their courageous and ongoing effort to create quality jobs at one of America's largest retailers.  The 137 to 85 election result favoring Target management yesterday, subject to challenge by the union, is yet another example of how corporate executives with the help of sophisticated anti-union law firms and public relations agencies can undermine the aspirations of workers for a voice on the job.  One of the great untold stories in our nation today is how giant retailers like Target and Wal-Mart have used relentless anti-union campaigns to maintain a model of employment based on low-wages, unpredictable work schedules, and a lack of job security.
