McDonald's has launched an outrageous online petition to distort the definition of 'McJob'. Sign the Brandworkers counter-petition to stop the burger giant's hypocrisy.
We, the undersigned, petition the major dictionary
companies to maintain the current definition of McJob
and reject McDonald’s public relations campaign to
redefine the term. McJob is currently defined in the
dictionary as “an unstimulating, low-paid job with few
prospects, esp. one created by the expansion of the
service sector.”
Contrary to McDonald’s disingenuous PR efforts, the
fast food giant and its counterparts still do not pay
a fair wage, offer affordable benefits, or respect the
right of employees to join a labor union.
For a corporation like McDonald’s, which has shown
consistent disrespect for workers, to speak in the
name of service employees and to claim insult on their
behalf is the height of irony. Nothing in the
definition impugns the hard work of service employees
or calls into question their contribution to our
communities and economies. The critical language in
the definition is rightly directed at the job and not
the worker.
It’s time for McDonald’s to stop using the
dictionary companies as PR tools. Please reject the attempt to
redefine McJob until the day when service workers do
in fact receive fair compensation for their labor and
respect for their rights.
