Gay Workers Score a Victory, But More Struggles Lie Ahead

The Employment Nondiscrimination Act, a bill seeking to protect gay men, lesbians, and bisexuals against discrimination in the workplace, was passed by the House on November 7. This contentious piece of legislation originally included protections for transgender workers but unfortunately that part of the bill was taken out in order to maintain the support of moderate and conservative Democrats. Although some politicians viewed the passing of this bill as a victory, others are disheartened about the lack of protections concerning gender identity and the fact that even if the Senate passes the bill it is expected that President Bush will veto it.
