Striking Warehouse Workers Take Action at Shareholder's Office

Fri, 06/11/2010 - 10:59 -- Steph

Striking warehouse workers from Shaw’s Supermarkets stepped up their campaign yesterday with an action at State Street Bank, the third largest shareholder of Supervalu, Shaw’s parent company. The 310 warehouse workers have been on strike since March 7 after the company demanded major concessions in contract negotiations, including drastic wage and benefit cuts.

The workers, members of United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local 791, began a 60-mile march on May 23 from their warehouse in Methuen, Mass., to a rally at the state House in Boston.

Women Sue Sterling Jewelers for Gender Discrimination

Wed, 09/16/2009 - 12:34 -- Steph

Retail workers are suing Sterling Jewelers, the nation's largest specialty retail jeweler. A federal arbitrator is investigating if Sterling paid female employees $2-3 per hour less than males and if women were offered fewer promotions than their male counterparts. The arbitrator will determine if the case can have class-action status, which means it would be broadened to include current and former workers corporatewide.

NYC Garment Workers Challenge Sweatshop Conditions

Tue, 08/18/2009 - 12:38 -- Steph

While it might be surprising to some that sweatshops still exist in the USA in 2009, low-income immigrant workers around the country are all too familiar with the grim reality of long hours, illegally low pay, and abuse from management. While Brandworkers’ Focus on the Food Chain initiative challenges sweatshop conditions in the food industry, our friends at the Ain't I a Woman?! campaign are taking on the garment industry.

Tipped Workers Win Big Against Aramark

Tue, 08/11/2009 - 12:27 -- Steph

In our last blog post, we had some bad news for tipped workers, as they were yet again left out of the federal minimum wage increase. For this blog post, the tune is a bit more upbeat. We’re happy to see that despite the government’s complete detachment from the issues of working people, tipped workers are nonetheless fighting back against the myriad of ways they are cheated by their employers.

In Boston, tipped food service workers at three workplaces have reached settlements with food contracting giant Aramark.

Home Depot and the Farce of the "Manager" Title

Thu, 07/23/2009 - 13:09 -- Steph

It is common practice for companies to misclassify employees in order to be exempt from paying overtime. Employers are required to pay time-and-a-half to employees who work over 40 hours per week. However, those employees classified as "managers" are exempt from the overtime pay.

As a result, many workers find themselves taking on the added responsibilities of management while lacking most managerial privileges.
