Juan Baten Remembrance Coverage

Focus on the Food Chain has been hard at work seeking justice in the crushing death of Juan Baten, who was killed just over a year ago in a Brooklyn tortilla factory. We've been working closely with Juan's widow, Rosario, to honor Juan's memory, hold his employer accountable, and to do everything in our power to make sure such a tragedy isn't repeated in New York's food supply chain.

Statement of Brandworkers International on the Union Vote at Target

"Brandworkers applauds the Target workers and UFCW Local 1500 for their courageous and ongoing effort to create quality jobs at one of America's largest retailers.  The 137 to 85 election result favoring Target management yesterday, subject to challenge by the union, is yet another example of how corporate executives with the help of sophisticated anti-union law firms and public relations agencies can undermine the aspirations of workers for a voice on the job.  One of the great untold stories in our nation today is how giant retailers like Target and Wal-Mart have used relentless anti-union campaigns to maintain a model of employment based on low-wages, unpredictable work schedules, and a lack of job security.

With the U.S. economy undergoing a dramatic shift toward service-oriented jobs, millions of American families are trying to make ends meet with jobs at retail establishments.  Given the tremendous scope of employment in the retail sector, the nature of these jobs will increasingly speak to what kind of nation we live in- one with a persistent and outsized underclass or one where working families can thrive with economic security and peace of mind.

The brazen threats, retaliation, and propaganda exhibited by Target in this election campaign constitute a painful reminder that a national dialogue and a broad-based movement are needed to change the low-road employment model favored by so many of the large retail corporations. Only then can we start moving toward an economy and a society that rewards hard work with a living wage, consistent work schedules, and respect on the job."

Brandworkers International is a New York-based non-profit organization protecting and advancing the rights of retail and food employees. Through legal, advocacy, and organizing support, Brandworkers helps win employer compliance with the law and challenges corporate misconduct in the community.
